I grew Japanese Lucky and Spacemaster during summer of 2025. Spacemaster was never bitter even when I was behind of watering during hot days. It’s crunchy and refreshing with thin skin. I eat it straight as snacks. On the other hand, Japanese Lucky could be very bitter, and I threw away more than 70% of it to the compost bin. This variety is prone to powdery mildew. I found it not really problematic once passing the initial growth stage. It continued to produce fruits even with leaves covered with mildew. All I did was to remove dead and old leaves routinely to slow down the spread to younger leaves. I didn’t spray any forms of chemical products to suppress the powdery mildew.
